Gakutei was both an artist and poet who provided the artwork for many surimono (i.e., poem print ). He included flowers and (or) birds in more than ten of these surimono and eleven examples are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Gakutei’s flowers and birds were not always drawn in a true-to-life way but knowledgeable picture viewers would be able to identify the species depicted without much difficulty.
